Engine replacement

Van engine replacement: steps, timing and vehicle documents

We deliver a new engine within 5 working days of receiving the advance payment. Fitting in a workshop takes 4 to 22 hours, depending on the engine type. Below are the steps, fitting and running-in, and what to check in the vehicle documents.

Engine replacement step by step

Six steps from the VIN to the paperwork. The new engine comes from us, the fitting is done by your workshop.

  1. VIN and engine code

From the VIN we check which engine your van has and that the new engine fits it. The check is free. The engine code is on the engine and sometimes in the vehicle documents; if you can't find it, write “don't know”. Where to find the engine code

  2. Engine type

Complete engine, long block or short block. It comes down to the condition of the cylinder head, turbo and injectors, and how many parts the workshop can transfer from the old engine. Engine type comparison

  3. Quote and advance payment

We email the price, the shipping cost and the delivery date, typically within 1 hour during business hours. Once you accept the quote, we issue a proforma invoice for 50%.

  4. Delivery

We deliver the engine within 5 working days of receiving the advance payment, to your address or straight to the workshop. The shipping cost is set individually for your country and stated in the quote. The remaining 50% is due on delivery.

  5. Fitting in the workshop

Your workshop or mechanic fits the engine according to the manufacturer's procedures. What to do before fitting, after it and during running-in is below under Fitting and running-in.

  6. Vehicle documents

Whether anything needs updating in the vehicle documents depends on the country. More below. You don't return the old engine to us.

How long an engine replacement takes

Engine delivery plus fitting in the workshop. The engine type decides how much work is left for the workshop.

Engine type Delivery Fitting in the workshop
Complete engine within 5 working days 4–8 hours
Long block within 5 working days 8–14 hours
Short block within 5 working days 14–22 hours

Fitting times are indicative and depend on the make, the generation and the workshop's equipment. Special engine codes take longer to deliver; the exact delivery date is always in the quote.

Fitting

Fitting and running in a new engine

Instructions for the workshop or mechanic fitting the engine. The 12-month warranty applies when the engine is fitted correctly according to the manufacturer's procedures, with new engine oil and new filters.

Before fitting

  • Find and fix the cause of the old engine's failure, for example why the engine seized. If the fault was confined to the engine itself, carry on with the standard installation. Otherwise replace or repair every part the failure affected.
  • Replace the heat exchangers and any other parts that may hold contamination, especially those that engine oil flows through.
  • On a turbocharged engine, check the condition of the turbo and replace its oil feed and oil return lines.
  • Check that the vehicle's radiators and heat exchangers are not clogged or contaminated. Clean them thoroughly or replace them as needed.
  • Replace the water pump, timing kit and oil pump with new ones, unless they come with the supplied engine. Do not reuse worn parts.
  • Use only oil and coolant that meet the vehicle or engine manufacturer's specification. Mix the coolant in the ratio the manufacturer recommends.
  • We also recommend replacing the thermostat together with the timing kit, the clutch and flywheel at higher mileage, and the fuel filtration when you replace the high-pressure pump.

We can add the parts for the engine to the same quote; just tick them in the form.

After fitting

  • Start the engine and let it idle only long enough to confirm correct oil pressure and that nothing leaks.
  • Check for warning lights and for fault codes stored in the engine control unit.
  • Keep an eye on the coolant temperature, oil pressure and charging throughout.
  • Bleed the cooling system following the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Make sure the cooling works. Once the cooling fan cuts in, you can switch the engine off.
  • If the fan does not cut in and the coolant temperature goes above 90–95 °C, switch the engine off immediately and check the cooling system again.
  • Once the engine has cooled down completely, check the coolant level and top it up if needed.
  • During the first hours of operation, avoid long periods of idling.

Running-in

  • For the first 1,000 km, avoid sustained full-load driving.
  • Avoid long stretches at a constant engine speed. Vary the load and engine speed gradually.
  • Do not exceed the limits set by the manufacturer.
  • Check the oil and coolant levels roughly every 1,000 km.
  • Change the oil and filters after the first 3,000 km. This helps remove any machining residue and contamination from the lubrication system.

Servicing after running-in

  • Service the vehicle at the intervals set by the vehicle or engine manufacturer.
  • If those intervals are very long, we recommend changing the oil and filters every 15,000–20,000 km, and at least once a year.

These are general recommendations and do not replace the procedures of the engine or vehicle manufacturer.

Documents

Vehicle documents after an engine replacement

The rules differ from country to country, and so does what the vehicle documents record about the engine. We always check the engine type by VIN, so before you order you know whether the new engine is the same type as the original one.

Different engine type

If the new engine is a different type from the original, the change is usually dealt with by the vehicle registration authority or at a vehicle inspection centre. Check what applies in your country there before the engine is fitted.

Same engine type

Some vehicle documents list the engine number, and a new engine has a different one. If you are not sure what your documents say about the engine, ask the registration authority or an inspection centre before fitting.
