The VW Crafter is the top-line van in the 3.0 – 5.5 t segment. The first generation (Mk1, 2006–2016) was built on the Mercedes Sprinter platform but with VW running gear - 5-cylinder 2.5 TDI and later 4-cylinder 2.0 TDI. The second generation (Mk2, 2017+) is a pure VW design shared with the MAN TGE, exclusively running the 2.0 TDI EA288 family.

The most widely used engine line in the Crafter - in the Mk1 it replaced the older 2.5 TDI 5-cylinders (from 2011), in the Mk2 it is the only option. Bosch CRI3 common rail with chain timing at the rear of the engine and an AdBlue SCR system on Euro 6 versions. The Mk2 EA288 engines are identical to those in the MAN TGE - codes match exactly.

The classic 5-cylinder turbodiesel with Pumpe-Düse (PD) injection - used in the first-generation Crafter NCV3 until 2011. Known for its unmistakable sound and high low-end torque. Suitable for vehicles that want to keep the original configuration of the older Crafter Mk1.

Garrett / BorgWarner / IHI turbo

VNT turbo for the 2.0 TDI EA189 and EA288, sequential Bi-Turbo (Garrett + IHI) for the Bi-TDI variants CSL / CSN and DAUF / DAVF. Including actuators and gaskets.

Bosch / Siemens injectors

Bosch CRI2 / CRI3 common rail for the 2.0 TDI and Pumpe-Düse units for the 2.5 TDI BJJ–BJM. With coding data for IMA programming into the ECU.

High-pressure pump

Bosch CP4.1 for the EA288 (Mk2), CP3 for the EA189 (Mk1). On the 2.5 TDI it is a tandem vacuum + fuel pump. Prone to fuel contamination - we recommend filtration as well.

Timing

The 2.0 TDI EA288 uses chain timing (~150,000 km interval), the 2.5 TDI uses a toothed belt with a 120,000 km service interval. Kits include the water pump and tensioners.

Cylinder head

Fully assembled 2.0 TDI and 2.5 TDI 5-cylinder heads. Heads for BJK / BJL / BJM are specific to the Crafter Mk1. A solution for engine overheating or a cracked head.

Clutch and flywheel

Three-piece clutch kits and dual-mass flywheels for the 6-speed manual Mk1, 6-speed manual Mk2 and 8-speed automatic (8AT) for the Bi-Turbo versions. Genuine Sachs / LuK.
